14-year-old TARC stabbing victim dies
Family and friends mourn the loss of a teenager stabbed on a TARC bus early Sunday morning died Tuesday afternoon.
Fourteen-year-old Me’Quale Offutt died Tuesday afternoon after two days in the hospital.
“He took a baby that was loved,” Raushanah Daniel, Offutt’s aunt, said. “I pray for him because he has to deal with this for the rest of his life.”
Police said Offutt was stabbed three times, once in the heart, by 44-year-old Anthony Allen after an altercation on a TARC bus early Sunday morning. Allen, police said also stabbed a 13-year-old girl that was riding with Offutt.
Originally, Allen was charged with assault, but now faces a murder charge in connection with Offutt’s death.
“He’s gonna have to deal with it, and envision this and relive this day over and over and over again,” she said about Allen. “That he plunged a knife into the chest of a 14-year-old baby. He ultimately took his life.”
The coroner said Offutt’s brain stopped working Tuesday morning and the teenager was declared dead late in the afternoon. Police and TARC are still investigating, and the family still does not know many details of what led to the altercation.
“There is no reason for him to take a 14-year-old child’s life,” she said.
The family wants to thank everyone who helped Offutt fight for his life, and University of Louisville Hospital for their work.
“At one point, the hall was just full of family,” Rev. Michael Rodgers, Offutt’s cousin, said. “And we had to of course kind of back off a little bit because they still have other patients on the floor. But they were still over-accommodating to us as a family.”
Family members said they decided to donate his organs.
“We just wanted to make sure a piece of him will live on,” Daniel said. “We wanted to make sure that he didn’t die in vain, and we were able to bless and gift another family, another child, another adult, with a piece of him. That’s just something he would’ve wanted cause he was a giving kid.”
The other victim, a 13-year-old girl, is at Kosair Children’s Hospital in stable condition. My heart go out to the families of the victims and to others impacted by this tragedy.
