Illinois Newspaper under fire for offensive ’12 Years a Slave’ headlines
Steve McQueen ’12 Years a Slave’ made headlines on Sunday, the drama based in the slave era won the Academy Award for best picture, making history as the first movie from a black director to receive an award in the film industry’s highest honor in 86 years of the Oscars.
But of course, someone always has something negative to say.
A central Illinois newspaper is under fire for its choice of words when announcing the big Oscar winner for Best Motion Picture.
The News-Gazette decided to play off of 12 Years a Slave’s title and write “12 Years a Slave” escapes with top Oscar” as its main headline.
